Woman charged in $2-milion real estate scam | hanover, victims ...

SANTA ANA ? A Seal Beach woman found guilty last year of impersonating an FBI agent has been indicted on suspicion of defrauding 50 victims of more than $2million.

A federal grand jury in Santa Ana named Karen Hanover, 46, in an indictment on Wednesday related to an investment scam where victims were falsely promised ownership in commercial real estate. According to the indictment, Hanover ran the scheme out of two Long Beach-based companies and also held seminars for would-be investors in Southern California, Dallas and Las Vegas.

The indictment goes on that Hanover promised to serve as an investment partner to victims who paid her between $19,000 and $29,997. In return, she falsely told victims they would receive their money back in returns and guaranteed ownership in the property, the indictment said.

She is scheduled for arraignment on Jan. 2. If convicted, Hanover would face up to 60 years in federal prison.

In 2011, a panel of judges found Hanover guilty of impersonating an FBI agent in a phone call with one of her investors, court documents said. Prosecutors said she used software to disguise her voice and the outbound number read by caller ID. After identifying herself as a male FBI agent, Hanover threatened the woman, who had taken her complaints of fraud to the authorities.

She was sentenced to six months in prison for the impersonation and acquitted on two other counts of obstruction of justice.
