Launchers turned in to LAPD were from military

The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES ? Experts say two rocket launchers turned in during a one-day gun buyback program in Los Angeles appear to be antitank weapons from the military.

The LA Times reports one of the rocket launchers is likely a version of the AT4, a single-shot, disposable antitank weapon manufactured in Sweden.

Police said the people who turned them in claimed they had family members who were once in the military. Just the barrels of the weapons were turned in, without the projectiles.

Det. Gus Villanueva tells the Times police would check the origins of the weapons with the U.S. military to see if they were ever stolen. He says officers could not provide details on the models.

Wednesday?s buyback program brought in 2,037 firearms, including 901 handguns, 698 rifles, 363 shotguns and 75 assault weapons.

Flying or driving?

Many years ago, we spent three days in Washington, D. C. en route to Boston and Maine (family in both of last two places). This was in the good old days when in-laws had a lake cottage in Maine. Our vacations would last 5-6 weeks total. Miss those days.

ANYway, from central Arkansas, we made that trip in probably 8 days up (including D.C.) and 4 days back, just counting the driving days.

Another year we incorporated a trip through a little part of Canada, as well as Niagara Falls.

Great trips, both of them. I hope you can make it happen.

btw, our eldest lives in Portland, ME. Quite often, he and his gf take the train to Boston, spend a couple days, and head back to ME. They think that is fun.

Depends on how much time you want to spend in each place, I guess. For all that is in it, Boston proper is a fairly small place. You could walk it in an afternoon. "Maine" is pretty vague. Without a more focused idea of what you have in mind, it is hard to comment. DC is huge, painfully urban, IMO well described by JFK's famous line ("a city of northern charm and southern efficiency"), and has a truly enormous amount of stuff to see. You could easily spend half or more of your time there and not really see everything.

I just did a quick look at the mileage. Wash DC > Boston > Bar Harbor > Niagra Falls is almost 1500 miles so you'll have about 30 hours of driving just getting from place to place. Here is a rough itinerary that might work. Not sure where you are coming from but here it goes.

1 day getting to DC
3 days total driving time between major stops
3 days in DC
1 day in Boston
2 days in Maine
1 day at Niagra Falls
1 day getting home from Niagra Falls

That's 12 days of pretty intense sight-seeing and traveling. It's doable and you'll have lots of highlights and memories but you'll still miss a lot. Look at it this way...you'll have lots to see on your next trip to these areas.

No, don't do both (especially starting from the Milwaukee area). My suggestions are to first do the Capitol government (is there still an FBI tour? Your son might love that) and museums, Monticello, Mount Vernon, Williamsburg stuff for one trip, before high school.

Then the next summer or so, do the New England American Revolution sites (Boston, Concord) and American literature (Hawthorne, Thoreau, Dickinson, and Maine's Steven King) and seashores of the Cape and Maine beaches, and swing home through Niagara Falls. And see Fenway Park of course.

Better yet, separately take your DW alone to the Falls and then Montreal for some smoochie smoochie romance.

I agree that New England, Washington DC, and Western NY (Niagra Falls) are three different vacations. By the same token, you can accomplish the equivalent of two vacations in 12 days. But not three vacations.

While you can walk around Boston in a day, that's all you'll be able to do in that day, i.e., walk around Boston. In essence, you can visit the Freedom Trail in a day, enjoying stops along the way such as Faneuil Hall, and perhaps do a duck tour... maybe. But you'll need a lot more time to "visit Boston". If you tried to do it all in a day, you won't be able to fit in a game at Fenway (which might be a very attractive part of a vacation in Boston for some), and you surely won't be able to visit Salem (3/4 day, between the maritime museum and all the Witch trial historical stuff, not to mention the Peabody-Essex Museum if your son is inclined toward historical art and culture in any way).

You can spend most of a full day in either Old Sturbridge Village or Plymouth Plantation (though I would recommending doing both in the same trip, since they "cover the same bases"). You may also want to consider fitting in a whale watching tour while you're here.

Then there's Minuteman National Historical Park, which actually meanders in sections from the Lexington Common ("the shot heard 'round the world"), through the Old Battle Road that winds through Lincoln MA ("The redcoats are Coming!"), complete with restored colonial homes with scheduled and self-guided tours, to Concord and the Old North Bridge. And despite living here for so many years, I only just realized that beyond the Old North Bridge is The Old Manse! (Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne both called the Manse home for a time.)

And then there's Maine. There are lots of options for spending a day in Maine, though I don't really associate Maine with someplace I'd take a 13 year old to, necessarily. I think there's more than enough to full a full week just within Eastern Massachusetts itself.

And if you think it is difficult to fit "Visiting Boston" into just one week (and after reading what I wrote above, if I did a good job, then you should think it would be difficult to do so), "Visiting Washington DC" in just one week would be even more difficult. The Capitol; the White House; the Washington Memorial; the Jefferson Memorial; the Viet Nam War Memorial; the Roosevelt Memorial; the King Memorial; Arlington National; the Smithsonian itself, and its associated museums - History and Technology (name has changed, but I don't remember what they're calling it now); Air and Space; Frick (art). Then: The National Archives; the Bureau of Engraving and Printing; the Holocaust Museum; Ford's Theater; Kennedy Center. And that's just right off the very top of my head. As I sit typing this sentence a dozen others just popped into my head. And I've never lived there ... that just from my own personal visits to the place, over the years. I'd type some more in, but I've got to get ready for church.

I've been to all four and thoroughly enjoyed them all, but 12 days wouldn't be enough for us for all four.
  • You could spend a couple of days in DC, there's a lot of American history to see there. Wouldn't want to live there, but it's an amazing city, very expensive.
  • I love Boston, but traffic is a nightmare there. Drivers are more aggressive there than any other city I've driven in. Really cool city though, lots of history there too. Always go to Faniel Hall/Quincy Market and Legal Seafoods even if they are for tourists.
  • Loved Bar Harbor (Acadia Natl Park too), Kennebunkport and all the coastal towns except Boothbay Harbor, way too touristy IMO. Beautiful harbor, horrible town.
  • Niagara Falls is a one day trip IMO. Everyone should see it in person once, pictures can't do it justice. The Canadian side is much nicer than the US side.
I'd start with a list of what you want to do & see in each location. Some people are happy just seeing landmarks and a guided tour can do that in one day. OTOH, some people like to immerse themselves and explore every nook an cranny, avoiding the tourist traps, that can take weeks. Most of us are probably somewhere in between. Once you think through what you want to do & see, and figure travel times, you may have your answer...

Washington DC and New England are just two different parts of the country. Don't do them both in 12 days. When we went to Washington DC we also stayed in Fredricksburg, VA. This gets you closer to Mt. Vernon, Monticello, and you can also explore Civil War battlefields. Boston is a 3 day kind of place. New York to Boston to Maine would be a practical itinerary. If you like to do a lot of driving consider driving through New England during the fall colors.

I think you're talking about four different vacations, not one- especially starting out from Milwaukee. I'd spend a week in and around each of DC, NYC, Boston and Maine, not counting the drive to and from. In 12 days, you could possibly combine Boston and Maine, or NYC and DC, but you would be shortchanging yourself a little. And I see no possible way to enjoy any trip that combines all four in that time.

A few impressions from someone who has lived there:

DC in August is very unpleasant in terms of both the weather and the crowds. Being one of the most delightful cities in the world in terms of its attractions, those two things cancel each other out, but only just. If you can arrange your visit in the spring or fall, you'll enjoy it immensely.

Maine is difficult to characterize. Most people don't really realize just how big it is. The coastal area between New Hampshire and Portland is what most people think of, and you can enjoy a taste of most of that area in a week.

Boston is my least favorite city to drive in, and I've lived in cities all over the world. I would gladly spend three days in the center, but that's about it.

Niagara Falls is a good place to spend the night when you're traveling, with either an afternoon or a morning devoted to sightseeing. That's about it.

Two arrested in hunt for killers of church organist

Mr Greaves, 68, an Anglican lay reader, was attacked just 200 yards from St Saviour's Church in High Green, Sheffield, where he was due to lead the worship at the Eucharist.

Mr Greaves' widow, Maureen, earlier said she had been left "devastated" by his death. The couple have four grown-up children, including a daughter who is working as a missionary in Mozambique, and two grandchildren.

Police are treating Mr Greaves' death as murder and said the motive for the attack is currently unclear.

Canon Simon Bessant, from St Saviour's, described Mr Greaves as a "good man" who fell victim to an evil act.

He said: "He was a gentle soul. He wasn't foolish - he would have handled the situation as best as anyone would but we don't know what he encountered."

Mr Bessant, who was at the church that night, said Mrs Greaves was not seeking vengeance but did want justice.

Dr Steven Croft, the Bishop of Sheffield, has sent a message to every parish in his diocese asking for prayers for Mr Greaves, his widow and their family.

Fearful of ban, frenzied buyers swarm gun stores

(AP) ? The phones at Red's Trading Post wouldn't stop ringing. Would-be customers from as far away as New York wanted to know if the Twin Falls, Idaho gun shop had firearms in stock. Others clamored to find out if their orders had been shipped.

Overwhelmed, gun store manager Ryan Horsley had to do what no employee would ever think of doing just days before Christmas: He disconnected the phone lines for three whole days.

"We had to shut everything off," says Horsley, whose family has owned Red's Trading Post, the state's oldest gun shop, since 1936. "We were swamped in the store and online."

The phones at gun shops across the country are ringing off the hook. Demand for firearms, ammunition and bulletproof gear has surged since the Dec. 14 massacre in Newtown, Conn., that took the lives of 20 schoolchildren and six teachers and administrators. The shooting sparked calls for tighter gun control measures, especially for military-style assault weapons like the ones used in Newtown and in the Aurora, Colo., movie theater shooting earlier this year. The prospect of a possible weapons ban has sent gun enthusiasts into a panic and sparked a frenzy of buying at stores and gun dealers nationwide.

Assault rifles are sold out across the country. Rounds of .223 bullets, like those used in the AR-15 type Bushmaster rifle used in Newtown, are scarce. Stores are struggling to restock their shelves. Gun and ammunition makers are telling retailers they will have to wait months to get more.

Store owners who have been in the business for years say they have never seen demand like this before.

When asked how much sales have increased in the past few weeks, Horsley just laughed.

"We haven't even had a chance to look at it," he says. Horsley spends his days calling manufacturers around the country trying to buy more items for the store. Mainly, they tell him he has to wait.

Franklin Armory, a firearm maker in Morgan Hill, Calif., is telling dealers that it will take six months to fulfill their orders. The company plans to hire more workers and buy more machines to catch up, says Franklin Armory's President Jay Jacobson.

The shortage is leaving many would-be gun owners empty handed.

William Kotis went to a gun show in Winston-Salem, N.C., last weekend hoping to buy a rifle for target shooting. Almost everything was sold out.

"Assault rifles were selling like crazy," says Kotis, who is president and CEO of Kotis Holdings, a real estate development company based in Greensboro. "People are stockpiling."

He left without buying anything.

Luke Orlando's parents were able to get him the 12-gauge shotgun he wanted for Christmas to bird hunt, but his uncle wasn't as lucky.

"At Christmas dinner, my uncle expressed outrage that after waiting six months to use his Christmas bonus to purchase an AR-15, they are sold out and back ordered over a year," says Orlando, 18, a student at the University of Texas.

No organization publicly releases gun sales data. The only way to measure demand is by the number of background checks that are conducted when someone wants to buy a firearm. Those numbers are released by the Federal Reserve Bureau every month. Data for December is not out yet. But the Federal Bureau of Investigation says that it did 16.8 million firearm background checks as of the end of November, up more than 2 percent from a year ago.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation, which handles background checks for the state, can't keep up with the number of requests it is getting. The bureau has pulled staff from other units and increased its hours, says spokesperson Susan Medina.

Many firearm dealers and manufacturers say that Obama's comments since the Newtown school shooting are driving demand.

James Zimmerman of SelwayArmory.com, a website that sells guns, ammunition and knives, says that sales really took off on Dec. 19 after President Barack Obama held a White House press conference announcing that Vice President Joe Biden would lead a team tasked with coming up with "concrete proposals" to curb gun violence.

That day, one customer ordered 32,000 rounds of ammunition from SelwayArmory.com, worth close to $18,000. The order had to be shipped from the company's Lolo, Mont., office to Kentucky on a freight truck.

"I've done more sales in the week after the 19th than I have the whole year," says Zimmerman, who launched SelwayArmory.com in 2009.

At Lady Liberty Gunsmithing LLC in Atlantic City, N.J., a customer called last week asking if a pistol he wanted was available. When he was told there was only one left, he drove more than two hours from Newark, N.J., to buy it that same day.

"People want guns now even more than ever," says Guy Petinga II, whose father opened the store above his home in 1996.

Others saw demand immediately after the shooting.

Bullet Blocker, which makes bulletproof vests, briefcases and insert panels, saw sales of its children's backpacks suddenly jump.

"That's how I found out about the tragedy. I saw the sales rise and then turned on CNN," says Elmar Uy, vice president of business operations at the Billerica, Mass., company.

Bullet Blocker has sold about 50 to 100 bulletproof backpacks a day since the shooting, up from about 10 to 15 in a regular week. The children's backpacks, which are designed to be used as shields, cost over $200 each.

"I've never seen numbers like this before," says Uy.

Jet rolls off Moscow runway, splits apart

By Alissa de Carbonnel, Reuters

MOSCOW -- A Russian airliner split into pieces after it slid off the runway and crashed onto a highway outside Moscow on Saturday, killing at least four of the 12 crew on board and leaving smoking chunks of fuselage on the icy road.

Television footage showed the Tupolev 204 jet, broken into pieces, with smoke billowing from the tail end and the cockpit broken clean off the front.?

A man was thrown from the plane as it rammed into the barrier of the highway outside Vnukovo airport, one witness told the TV channel Rossiya-24.

Another witness described pulling other people from the wreckage.

"The plane split into three pieces," Yelena Krylova, chief spokeswoman for the airport, said in televised comments.

An Emergency Services spokesman said four people died of injuries after the crash and four others were in hospital. Police said 12 crew members were on board, but no passengers.

"The plane went off the runway, broke through the barrier and caught fire," police spokesman Gennady Bogachyov said.

The mid-range Tu-204 was operated by the Russian airline Red Wings and was traveling from the Czech Republic, Krylova said.

Rubble from the crash was scattered across the highway and the plane's wings were torn from the fuselage, witnesses said.

Rescuers work at the site of the plane crash at Moscow's Vnukovo airport on Saturday.

"We saw how the plane skidded off the runway ... The nose, where business class is, broke off and a man fell out," said a witness, who gave his name as Alexei. "We helped him get into a mini-bus to take him to the hospital."

Another witness described pulling four people from the wreckage when he arrived at the scene before emergency service workers. "We could not get the pilot out of the cockpit but we saw a lot of blood," he told Rossiya-24.

Russian investigators said preliminary findings pointed to pilot error as the cause of the crash.

Russia and other former Soviet republics had some of the world's worst air-traffic safety records last year, with a total accident rate almost three times the world average, the International Air Transport Association said.

A passenger jet crashed and burst into flames after takeoff in Siberia in April, killing 31 people, and an airliner slammed into a riverbank in September 2011, wiping out the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl ice hockey team in a crash that killed 44 people.

The Russian-built Tu-204, which is comparable in size to a Boeing 757 or Airbus A321, is a Soviet-era design that was produced in the mid-1990s but is no longer being made. There have no major accidents previously reported with Tu-204s.

The crash during peak holiday travel ahead of Russia's New Year's vacation, which runs from Sunday through Jan. 9, cast a spotlight on Russia's poor air-safety record despite President Vladimir Putin's calls to improve controls.?

International Media Question Pakatan's Foreign Backers

It's not just the Malaysian press that is raising questions over the foreign funding of pro-Pakatan Rakyat groups; the international media is also turning the spotlight on the Opposition in the lead up to GE 13. The latest is RT, an international English news channel broadcast from Moscow, which has questioned "the opposition's links to foreign-funders in Washington."

"As the South-East Asian nation of Malaysia prepares for general elections, distrust of the political opposition and accusations of foreign interference have been major talking points in the political frequencies emanating from Kuala Lumpur," it said.

In a detailed op-ed on Wednesday, RT asked: "US attempting regime change in Malaysia: Fact or fiction?"

"In Malaysia, high-profile NGOs and media outlets have admittedly received funding from OSI (Open Society Institute) and satellite organizations of NED (US-based National Endowment for Democracy). Premesh Chandran, the CEO of the nation's most prominent alternative media outlet, Malaysiakini, is a grantee of George Soros's Open Society Foundations and launched the news organization with a $100,000 grant from the Bangkok-based Southeast Asian Press Alliance (SEAPA), another organization with dubious affiliations to the US State Department.

"Malaysiakini has come under pressure from local journalists for the lack of transparency in its financial management and hesitance in revealing the value of its shares. Additionally, Suaram, an NGO promoting human rights, has borne heavy criticism over its funding and organizational structure.

"Senator Ezam Mohd Nor, himself a recipient of Suaram's Human Rights Award, has accused the organization of employing poor research methods and attempting to disparage the government".

The channel's detailed analysis will make uncomfortable reading for pro-Opposition groups, including Bersih.

"After coming under heavy scrutiny for obfuscating funding sources, Bersih coalition leader Ambiga Sreenevasan admitted that her organization receives funding from the National Democratic Institute and the Open Society Institute.

"While Sreenevasan's organization claimed to be non-partisan and apolitical, members of Malaysia's political opposition openly endorsed the movement, and some were even present at the demonstrations," RT said.

"As elections loom, Bersih coalition leader Ambiga Sreenavasan is already dubbing them "the dirtiest elections ever seen" ? unsurprising rhetoric from a woman being handed her talking points by the US embassy."

Ouch. That must hurt, Ambiga.

RT also examined the possibility of US-based groups pushing for "regime change" in Malaysia.

"Despite Najib having good rapport with formal Western leaders, it is clear with whom the think-tank policy architects, Zionist lobbies, and foundation fellows have placed their loyalties.

"What is ticklishly ironic about reading op-eds penned by the likes of Wolfowitz and Al Gore, and how they laud Malaysia as a progressive and moderate model Islamic state, is that they concurrently demonize its leadership and dismiss them (as) authoritarian thugs," RT pointed out.

Despite the scaremongering and rhetoric emerging from Pakatan, RT makes it clear that the Opposition does not offer a credible alternative at all.

"Pakatan Rakyat, the main opposition coalition pitted against the ruling party, has yet to offer a fully coherent organizational program, and if the coalition ever came to power, the disunity of its component parties and their inability to agree on fundamental policies would be enough to conjure angrier, disenchanted youth back on to the streets, in larger numbers perhaps.

"To put it bluntly, the opposition lacks confidence from the business community and foreign investors; even the likes of JP Morgan have issued statements of concern over an opposition win," the op-ed said.

In fact, the most pressing threat to our multicultural society is the Islamist agenda promoted by PAS, which is trying to ride rough-shod over its 'allies' DAP and PKR.

"It should be noted that if Islamists ever wielded greater influence in Malaysia under an opposition coalition, one could imagine a sizable exodus of non-Muslim minorities and a subsequent flight of foreign capital, putting the nation's economy in a fragile and fractured state.

"And yet, the United States has poured millions into 'democracy promotion' efforts to strengthen the influence of NGOs that distort realities and cast doubt over the government's ability to be a coherent actor," RT said.

This shows that Pakatan and its friendly NGOs and media can no longer hide from the political agenda of their foreign backers.

"Malaysia does not have the kind of instability that warrants overt external intervention; backing regime-change efforts may only go so far as supporting dissidents and groups affiliated with Anwar Ibrahim," the international news channel said.

This is explosive stuff.

RT's detailed report is timely as the country gears up for the general election. Voters will now be better informed of Pakatan's efforts to realise the political agenda of their foreign backers, and the disastrous effect this could have on our country. The battle lines in GE 13 are now clearly drawn.

LG Display is bringing Ultra HD TVs in multiple sizes, high res mobile screens and more to CES

LG Display is bringing Ultra HD TVs in 55, 65 and 84inch sizes to CES, high res mobile screens too

The manufacturing white label behind products from LG Electronics and many, many other companies, LG Display will have something new for us in Las Vegas as well. In a press release, the company announced it will show off Ultra HD (4K) panels in 55-, 65- and 84-inch sizes (shown above), complete with its FPR passive 3D tech built in. Since LG Display makes panels for quite a few of the HDTVs on shelves, it follows that we'll be seeing actual products shipping in those sizes in the coming year from several brands. It also will show off its work in other areas, with a 30-inch 4K monitor, a 5.5-inch 1080p screen for smartphones, a 1,920 x 1,200 7-inch tablet display, and a new QSXGA (2,560 x 1,700) screen destined for laptops that packs all of those pixels into just 12.9-inches.

PPI isn't everything however, and LG Display is bringing several displays notable for their tiny bezels as well, including a 23.8-inch monitor in its Neo-Blade Series, a 13.3-inch laptop screen with a 2mm bezel, and a 4.7-inch mobile screen with a 1mm thick bezel. Finally, the new year also brings tweaks to its OLED displays, which will show off an ultra light and thin design at just 3.5kg and 4mm thick --- and hopefully actually being released in the US this year. Check out the release after the break for the full list of goodies, we'll be getting our own look at them in just a few days.

Japan PM adviser urges unlimited BOJ easing, higher price goal

TOKYO (Reuters) - The Bank of Japan should buy more long-dated government bonds and a wider variety of risk asset types, including foreign bonds, to achieve 2 to 3 percent inflation, Koichi Hamada, a special economic adviser to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, said on Thursday.

Hamada, 76, professor emeritus of economics at Yale University, also called for revising the BOJ Law that guarantees the central bank's independence, to make it more accountable for achieving its policy objectives.

"Generally speaking, the BOJ is making an effort. But there is hardly any change to its pace of 'too little, too late'," said Hamada, who was appointed a special adviser to Abe's cabinet.

"It is necessary to amend the BOJ law," he told Reuters in a telephone interview on Thursday.

The views of Hamada, who had been privately advising Abe before he was sworn in as Japan's prime minister on Wednesday, are likely to have a significant impact on the new government's policies.

"The BOJ should not only buy long-term bonds but purchase a wider type of assets such as commercial paper, real estate investment trusts (REITs) and shares, which will help to have an impact on the economy," said Hamada, who taught BOJ Governor Masaaki Shirakawa when he was a student at Japan's prestigious Tokyo University.

"I think buying foreign currency-denominated assets can also be a part of an effective monetary policy."

Hamada said it was desirable for the BOJ to set an inflation target of 2 to 3 percent to revive the economy and to help keep sharp yen rises in check.

While Japan should not target a specific exchange rate when guiding monetary policy, the level of the yen could be one way of measuring the extent of policy loosening, he said.

"The yen's weakening to close to 95 or 100 yen (per dollar) would be evidence of the effectiveness of monetary policy. The BOJ should ease monetary policy until inflation occurs, and the yen and prices are reacting appropriately," he said.

Abe, whose Liberal Democratic Party won a landslide victory in a lower house election on December 16, has called on the BOJ to set a 2 percent inflation target, double the bank's current goal, and to ease policy "without limits" to beat deflation. He has also threatened to revise the BOJ Law if his demands are not met, turning up the heat on the central bank.

The yen fell to a two-year low against the dollar and Tokyo stocks hit a 21-month high on Thursday, on expectations that Abe's government will pursue aggressive fiscal and monetary stimulus.

The BOJ already eased monetary policy last week via an increase in asset purchases, offering its third stimulus step in four months. It has also signaled that it will set a higher inflation target at its next meeting in January.

But Hamada, who headed the Japanese Cabinet Office's Economic and Social Research Institute, a government think tank, from 2001 to 2003, said the December measures were not enough.

"Everything the BOJ does is behind the curve," he said.

5 stores with great return policies

21 hrs.

What makes a great return policy?

Enough time to get that mistake back to the store? Recouping your money without having to dig through a pile of receipts? Receiving that return in whatever form is most convenient for you? And, if you're buying online, how about free return shipping?

These days, with a lot of merchants, you have to pick and choose which points are most important to you. When it comes to returns, very few retailers offer it all.

Some stores might give a full return within a certain window of time -- but you need a real receipt, not a gift receipt. Others have a very short time window but might not require much paperwork. And some are lenient on time but might limit you to a store gift card.

Don't forget that rules can also change depending on what you bought or how you paid for it. And a handful of stores also assess those pesky restocking fees.

It's enough to make even a veteran shopper dizzy.

During the holidays though, many of the major retailers will offer more liberal return policies, says Teri Gault, co-author of "Shop Smart, Save More."

Here, in no particular order, are five stores that are earning a reputation for making returns easy.

Nordstrom
The return policy is that there is no return policy, says Colin Johnson, spokesman for Nordstrom. "You won't find one posted at the cash register or on your receipt. We're just going to stand behind our merchandise. The bottom line is that we work with the customer."

The highlights to this kind of thinking for a consumer are that there's no time limit, no receipt required and no paperwork. And you get treated the same whether you have a gift receipt or purchase receipt.

If you bought online from Nordstrom.com, the store provides free return shipping, he says. Or you can take the item back to a local store.

"The way it works is we ask our people in the stores to use good judgment," Johnson says. "The ultimate objective is taking care of the customer. It really depends on the situation. You really can't have a rule book that takes into account every scenario."

The chain's discount store, Nordstrom Rack, operates a little differently with respect to returns because items come from closeouts and special purchases, says Johnson. There, you'll have 30 days to return items, and receipts and tags are preferred, he says.

Bottom line, Johnson says, is that employees "try to remove the clutter -- the policy-type stuff that can get in the way of taking care of the customer."

Zappos.com
You'd think an online shoe store would be a tough sell, since shoes are all about fit.

But Zappos.com has built a business around making returns easy so that customers can order several pairs, try them on and ship back the ones that don't work. As a result, the retailer is as famous for its return policy as it is for its shoes.

"The return policy for Zappos.com is if you're not 100 percent satisfied with your purchase, you can return it for a full refund," says Corey Schreiber, content developer for Zappos Insights.

The highlights to Zappos.com's policy are that you have one year to return merchandise. Because you're shopping online (and orders are tracked), you never need a receipt. Shipping is free for orders and returns. And for returns, you can print out shipping labels at the Zappos site, or the company will email or snail mail them to you, he says.

One cool feature is the company's "advanced exchange." If you need a different size or color, the company will ship it to you for free. All you have to do is send back the first item within the next two weeks, he says. All the shipping is free, and you don't have to worry about carrying two items on your credit or debit account.

"We use it as a 'wow' tool," says Schreiber.

L.L. Bean
Just what every consumer needs: No time limits and no receipts required.

If you bought online from L.L.Bean, you can return the merchandise to your local store, or you can send the item back using prepaid labels you can print from the site.

It's all part of the Maine-based retailer's "100 percent satisfaction guarantee," says Carolyn Beem, an L.L.Bean spokeswoman. "We are one of the few companies out there that lets the customer define what 'satisfaction' is," she says.

Return shipping is $6.50 (deducted from your refund) or free if you have an L.L.Bean credit card or are sending back the item because it's defective, she says.

During the lifetime of a product, if you find you're not happy, "We encourage you to return it for a refund, store credit or replacement," Beem says.

"It's a pretty simple policy," she says.

Costco
Membership club Costco is another retailer trying to make returns easy.

Shoppers are members who pay fees to join, so "We will refund in full at any time (if) a member is dissatisfied," says Franz Lazarus, an executive vice president with Costco. Members generally get the refund in the same form they paid, while nonmembers would likely get cash or store gift cards, he says.

With consumer electronics, which tend to have a shelf life, there is a 90-day window to return, he says. "That's the only exception."

And that's been the only change to the return policy over the years, says Lazarus. "We felt at one point several years ago that we had to initiate that because technology was changing so rapidly."

You also don't have to have a receipt, he says. "(While) we like for there to be a receipt because it makes the process easier, we would not refuse a refund because there was no receipt."

Buying online? "Anything that's purchased online can be returned to one of our locations," he says. And return shipping is free.

Target
If you paid via credit card, debit card, gift card or check, the store can track your purchase and refund the full amount without a receipt, says Jessica Deede, spokeswoman for the retailer.

The store's return window is 90 days. The one exception is consumer electronics, which have a 30-day return window.

Target even offers shoppers a generous "gift" during holiday time. For holiday purchases (anything bought in November or before Dec. 24), that 30-day clock doesn't start until Dec. 26, she says. That way shoppers "don't have to hold off or wait," to buy, Deede says.

With the actual receipt (or searchable purchase record), you'll get all of your money back. If you have a gift receipt, you'll get a gift card or exchange, she says.

If you paid by check, consult a calendar. If it's been less than seven days, you could be offered cash or a gift card, says Deede. But if the store has had at least a week to clear the check, then you'll get a cash refund, she says.

Buying online? Most products can be returned to your local store, says Deede. (To be sure check the "shipping & returns" tab before you buy, she advises.)

And if you want (or need) to ship it back, shipping costs are deducted from your return, says Deede.

How Reading The Referral Engine Changed My Business

What if you could teach your business to market itself?

What if ? instead of relying on expensive paid ad campaigns and direct sales, your business thrived based on referrals from happy customers?

Are You Good at Sales?

In starting my own business, I?ve learned that I?m not a very good sales person. I just don?t have that special instinct that I?ve seen great salespeople have. I?m too worried about inconveniencing people to ask for a sale.

A few months ago I read a book that literally changed my business. I had this book on my shelf for months before finally reading it. Once I finally picked it up, I couldn?t put it down.

The book is The Referral Engine, by John Jantsch.

Why We Refer Our Favorite Businesses

One of the premises of the book, is that people are ?wired? to make referrals to family and friends. It feels good to be ?in the know? about a great new restaurant, hip new club, or some new product and tell your friends about it.

Think about the last time you were walking down the street and someone stopped and asked you for directions. Didn?t it feel good to help them out and get them pointed in the right direction?

I know I enjoy referring my favorite products and businesses to my family and friends.

Creating a Compelling Experience For Your Customers

In this global economy, just about everything is a commodity that can be purchased cheaper somewhere else.

The way to differentiate your business is to provide real value, and deliver a compelling customer experience. People want to know that you are listening, and that you care about them and are willing to help them.

What if you could construct your ?customer experience? in a way that they are truly satisfied and thrilled with your product and support, and are glad to tell people about you? What if you invested your time and money here instead of buying ads and hiring direct sales people?

That?s what The Referral Engine advocates ? building your business in a way that provides remarkable products and services. So remarkable that your customers will want to refer you to their friends.

Starting My Business?

Right from the beginning I imagined Expand2Web as a customer service company ? one that provides real value and that people are thrilled to work with.

My business role models include Tony Hsieh from Zappos, Jeff Bezos from Amazon, Jason Fried from 37 Signals, and now John Jantsch from Duct Tape Marketing. These companies all provide great products or services, and legendary customer service.

When we started selling our first product ? The SmallBiz WordPress Theme ? we answered every customer email and question (and still do).

As we scaled up and sold more themes, that meant hiring a full time person to handle the support and build a process around delivering great customer support in a world where many WordPress themes and software providers simply refer customers to a forum where customers help each other out.

We invested heavily in customer support so we could get back to every customer and help them be successful, and drive great new features back into our product.

This meant hiring a highly skilled person to build a customer support process and work directly with customers and answer their questions, and go above and beyond what anyone expects. And highly skilled people aren?t cheap!

But I was still missing something.

Building A Business That People Want To Refer

Reading this book made me realize something. Although we were getting referrals from our customers naturally, we weren?t really leveraging our heavy ? and expensive ? investment in customer service.

As you?ll see, we weren?t setting expectations about referrals early in the sales process, we weren?t making it easy for people to refer us to others, and we weren?t ASKING for referrals, even though most of our customers were happy to provide them!

So I followed the advice that John Jastsch gives in his book ? we mapped out every customer interaction to see how we could provide a truly exceptional experience.

The book gave us a structure to leverage that investment in customer service and provide more value to our customers at the same time.

Customer Interaction Touchpoints

Customer Interaction Touchpoints

You can see from the map above, there are a lot of ways we interact with our customers.

Our Referral Action Plan for Expand2Web:

Here are a few of the things we did to improve our customer experience and encourage referrals:

1) We started setting expectations with potential customers early.

Before a customer even buys our product, we started setting expectations that we would ask them for a referral (when we deliver on our promise). On the sales pages and other pages about our products we explain that our mission is to make them so happy and successful they will want to tell their friends and co-workers about us.

This has the dual purpose of setting expectations that we will deliver real value and do whatever we can to make them happy, and also that we will ask them for a referral once we?ve delivered on that promise.

2) We created a ?Customer Welcome Kit? that welcomes every new customer, and helps them succeed.

Another excellent suggestion from the book was to create a customer welcome kit. We followed this and created a customer download area so that each customer could log in and get 24/7 access to the latest version of our software, to our support, and step-by-step training guides.

3) We added some unexpected bonuses for our customers in the customer welcome area.

For example, we found that the biggest issue for many of our SmallBiz customers was learning how to do things in WordPress. So we licensed a series of 19 short WordPress tutorial videos and included that free to our customers.

4) We ASK for referrals at key points in the customer relationship and make it safe and easy for customers to refer us to their friends and family.

We?ve learned the crucial points to ask for referrals, and how to do that in a way that our customers feel safe and want to refer us.

For example, in the book, John Jantsch points out that there are some key times in your customer interactions that are best for asking for referrals.

Strangely, right after a support request is one of them. We?ve been working on ways to politely ask for referrals from our customers in a risk free way, and to make it easy for them.

Benefits, for Us AND Our Customers

This is a process that we are continually refining and improving. But already it has helped our business tremendously in four ways:

  1. Improved customer experience. which leads to more happy customers
  2. Better product. By reaching out to customers in this way, we get better feedback that goes right back into making our product better. We?ve had several new releases with great feedback from customers, and have another one coming out shortly that contains some fantastic new capabilities driven by customer feedback.
  3. Better relationships. With our customers. Not being a natural salesperson, it was hard for me to ASK customers for a referral. But asking for their help has led to many new relationships with my customers that I never would have had before. It turns out many people welcome the discussion, and are very willing to help.
  4. Increased referrals. This has already increased sales for us in a significant way.

Our mission now is to continue improving this process by creating an ever more compelling customer experience, from pre-sales through support, and making it easier for our customers to refer us to their family and friends. This is our primary marketing vehicle and the way we grow our business.

What about you? How do you get new customers? Do you pay for ads? Do SEO? Or are you building a business that your customers will refer to their family and friends?

p.s. When I read a great book, I make a mind map of it because it helps me remember the key things from the book. Here?s a copy of the mind map I made from the Referral Engine in case it is helpful to you.
