Israel police: Armed man attacks U.S. Embassy guard

JERUSALEM (AP) ? A knife and ax-wielding Israeli man attacked and lightly wounded a security guard at the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv on Tuesday before he was apprehended at the scene, police said.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the assailant was an Israeli citizen in his early 40s. He said man's motive was unknown, but political motives were not suspected and the incident had nothing to do with Israel's battle with Hamas militants in Gaza.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is scheduled to arrive in Israel later Tuesday to try and secure a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.

The U.S. Embassy on the Tel Aviv beachfront is one of the most secure locations in Israel, guarded around the clock by teams of Israeli and American security guards.

Rosenfeld said security was increased after the attack.

The Israeli embassy guard was slightly injured in the leg before firing a warning shot in the air, Rosenfeld said. The attacker was being questioned.

The U.S. Embassy did not immediately comment.

Photo Tour Frankfurt's A-Plus Concourse - Business Insider

Last month, Lufthansa opened the brand-spanking-new A-Plus Concourse at Germany's Frankfurt International Airport. Why's it so special?

Well, among other things, it's directly designed for the biggest, baddest airplanes out there. We're talking A340s, 747s, 747-8is, and the almighty A380. This week, we'll take you inside and all around this place through which some 6 million travelers will journey each year.

Click here to jump to photos of the concourse >

0500 hours.

The seatbelt sign is on and tray tables are up and locked. The Lufthansa Airbus A380 named "Tokio" is on final approach to Frankfurt International and we're inside.

Seat 15K.

It's a window, upper deck, right over the hulking wing of this superjumbo. Looking out, the airport on the horizon glows with the fluorescence of its millions of lights, pre-dawn. Usually we're not super anxious to leave a plane to experience the airport, but Frankfurt is an exception.

Wheels down.

Turning off onto the taxiway, we can already spot the many Lufthansa crane logos that adorn each Star Alliance gate. It's pretty obvious who rules this coop.

Rounding a corner, the A380 aims for its new home on the ground?a long, sleek concourse with gates and facilities designed for its massive dimensions. Whereas the plane squeezes itself into other airports, like buttoning pants two sizes too small, here it finds Frankfurt's just-opened A-Plus Concourse is tailor-made with breathing room. Once we've parked, three jet bridges stretch out to welcome over 500 passengers into these fresh digs.

Yeah, we're pretty excited. New airport smell is second only to new airplane smell. And there is a smell?like a freshly produced toy just unboxed. Our passport is stamped beneath an unfinished ceiling. The exuberance we feel is not unlike that of a person typing "FIRST!" in a blog post comments section.

Willkommen.

Right now, the A-Plus Pier at FRA is the only thing like it in the entire world. That is, a concourse dedicated to the jumbo-est of jumbos. Come early 2013, Emirates will open a 20-gate A380 terminal, but FRA beat 'em to the punch. Lufthansa is so proud of the place that they just launched a full virtual online tour.

A-Plus, with its seven gates and floor space roughly equaling 25 football fields, has two big goals: cut down average passenger transfer time from 60 minutes to 45 minutes and serve as home base for A340s, B747-400s, B747-800is and A380s from Lufthansa and 26 other Star Alliance carriers.

Now consider that each Lufthansa A380 seats 526 passengers, all of whom are milling about this new terminal for a couple pre-flight hours looking for food to eat, duty-free caviar to buy, or a comfy chair to sneak a few winks. Now multiply that passenger number by every new A380/B747/A340 planeload that's also awaiting departure. It could be a crazy place but it's totally not, thanks to good design and forethought.

For them (and you), the A-Plus Concourse has 60 new shops and restaurants, like Herm?s, Porsche Design, and what we think of as a duty-free wonderland. There's a Japanese restaurant, patisseries with pretzels, a McDonald's (of course), and five?count 'em?five new lounges. The only things there's not: free WiFi and an abundance of power outlets. You'll have to gain access to a lounge for all that.

Fun Fact: Frankfurt International Airport is the largest employment complex at a single location in all of Germany.

Another Fun Fact: If you'd like to check in to the A-Plus Concourse on Foursquare, it's listed under its German name: "Pier/Flugsteig A."

Disclosure: We traveled as guests of Lufthansa, but rest assured that all photos and opinions are completely our own.

RuPaul's All Stars Drag Race

1353429260876 Still of RuPaul. ???

Logo

In last night?s recap, the lovely Jillian Steinhauer and I fixated on the final runway presentations and that?dramatic?lip-synch between Jujubee and Raven, but in doing so, we forgot about the FISH! Ruth Boulet over at Channel Guide kindly reminded me in her recap this morning of the wonder that was the combination of rough, rough day drag and sports-games. Though shooting hoops clearly has nothing whatsoever to do with the drag arts, I have to admit that it was fun to see the girls give a little butch-queen realness.

Boulet also rightly noted the surprisingly useful notes of guest judges Wendi McLendon-Covey (of Reno 911! fame) and the immortal Elvira: ?Elvira knows a thing or two about creating super characters. Wendi offers Jujubee the feedback that if her character is bringing bronze to the world then maybe her character should show more skin. This is one of the things I like about?Drag Race. With some exceptions, RuPaul brings in guest judges that actually have opinions & express them in a useful fashion.? I?m not sure that I agree that most of the judges are all that articulate, but Covey?s thoughts this week were pretty impressive, especially the characterization one Boulet mentions.

Speaking of characters, Jillian and I made a great deal of fun out of Team Rujubee?s convoluted space opera background story about the Planet Solaris?exactly how did the Earth survive another planet?s landing here? But lucky for us, a suspiciously knowledgeable commenter weighed in with some answers:

The Planet Solaris, orbiting outside of the earth, is the same planet from Edward D. Wood Jr.'s film "Plan 9 from Outer Space." That is where solarbonite comes from, the material that makes sunlight explode like gasoline. The object that Juju held was not really a hair dryer, it was a ray gun that stimulates the pituitary and peneal glands of the recent dead and brings them to assimilated live. The reason earth people cannot see the Planet Solaris is because of their stupid minds, stupid mines. During the eclipse the planet Solaris remained where it was but the aliens came to earth in ships that look round in space, like cigars in the anmosphere, and are square when they land, made of paper plates. Raven and Jujubee were dressed in the traditional soldier's garb of the planet Solaris, which resembles an ice skating costume. Does that make it clear?

Clear as a Solarian crystal. And of course, next week, the winner of this quick little trip into RuPaul?s All Star land will also become clear, when the four remaining queens are loosed from their teams and made to compete as individuals. Tanner Stransky of EW put it well: ?The teams seemed like a great decision at first ? but they quickly proved to be somewhat of a hindrance. I want to see how these four queens work on their own, claws out, next week.? Meow. I?ll be watching with you, Tanner!

UK birds down by 44m since 1960s

The UK bird population has declined by 44 million since 1966, according to a report by conservation groups.

The study is the first of its kind to give an overall view of how birds in the UK have fared over the decades.

It found that while certain species had increased in number, populations of some common birds had diminished dramatically.

The report, "State of the UK's Birds 2012", was compiled from volunteers' observations of birds since the 1960s.

According to the report, carried out by experts from organisations such as the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and the British Trust for Ornithology, there are an estimated 166 million birds nesting in the UK compared with 210 million in 1966.

House sparrows were found to be among the worst hit, with numbers down by 20 million compared with the 1960s.

Since 2000 a modest increase has been reported in sparrow numbers, but causes of the overall decline of the bird population remain unclear.

"It's like the bird populations of the UK are on a roller-coaster, and we've seen a lot of ups and downs," said RSPB spokesperson Grahame Madge.

"We have more species breeding in the UK now than any other time in history... but we've got 44 million fewer individual birds nesting than in the 1960s."

Birds that are reliant on farmed land, such as lapwings, cuckoos and turtle doves, have seen a significant decrease in numbers, according to the study.

Experts believe this is largely down to changes in landscape providing less habitat in which birds can feed and nest.

"But what we're seeing at the moment is a huge interest from farmers in trying to help the wildlife on their land," added Mr Madge.

Successful species

"We know... that some species like wood pigeon and collared dove have done incredibly well and increased their populations," commented Mr Madge.

The wood pigeon has doubled its population since 1970, to an estimated 5.4 million nesting pairs.

Another example of a bird doing well is the great spotted woodpecker.

Mr Madge explained: "Many of our woodland birds are in trouble but great spotted woodpeckers have gone up 368% since the 1970s, which is an incredible increase."

But Mr Madge went on to say that despite such success stories the overall findings of the report were of concern, and that the report had allowed experts to appreciate "the enormity of the decline".

"When you see en masse that the UK has lost such a huge number of birds, the figures themselves are quite staggering," he said.

Riot in Kenya after bus bombing kills 9 in capital

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? Kenyan police fired bullets and tear gas in downtown Nairobi on Monday in an effort to stop rioters from fighting with ethnic Somalis one day after an improvised explosive device ripped through a bus and killed nine people.

The fighting exposes increasing tensions between the sizable ethnic Somali-Kenyan community and Kenyan groups with no ties to Somalia. Tensions have been rising over the last year as attackers have carried out a series of grenade and bomb attacks in Kenya, including several on Christian churches.

Strained relations with Kenyan-Somalis go back decades, to when post-colonial boundaries were drawn. But the most recent flare-up began in October 2011, when Kenya sent troops into Somalia to fight the terror group al-Shabab. After that deployment, al-Shabab threatened large-scale attacks in Kenya. Bomb and grenade attacks increased steadily.

Sunday's bomb attack ripped through a bus in Eastleigh, where Nairobi's Somali community lives, killing nine people. Sheik Mohammed Shakul, a spokesman for Muslim leaders, said such attacks are "barbaric and un-Islamic" and don't represent Muslims.

"This terrorist wants to disrupt the Muslim/Christian and multi-ethnic coexistence that we have enjoyed in this country. Unfortunately some people are falling into the trap that the terrorists have planned," Shakul said. "They want to cause a civil war between religions. Let's cool our emotions."

Tensions appear to be highest in and around the downtown neighborhood of Eastleigh, sometimes referred to as Little Somalia. Njau Kariuki, 50, runs a carpentry shop in Eastleigh, where he has lived for more than 25 years.

"People are angry. They are angry because of the people throwing bombs and grenades. They are blaming the Somalis. These Somalis are living with us but you cannot know their ways. They speak well and they will even make you laugh but in darkness they will stab you," he said.

Moses Ombati, Nairobi's police chief, confirmed the heavy suspicions between Kenya's communities. He said the attacks have "made people annoyed at whoever they imagined" carried out the attacks. He said three people are in custody over suspicions they took part in Sunday's attack.

Police reported two injuries in Monday's fighting, though an Associated Press reporter who saw ethnic Somalis stab a Kenyan and watched groups of young men hurl rocks at each other said it appeared likely more people were injured. Windows in homes and businesses were shattered during the hours-long street battles, and many buildings were looted.

Also Monday, the Kenya army reported that three of its soldiers were shot dead in northern Kenya by gunmen believed to have links with al-Shabab. Military spokesman Col. Cyrus Oguna said the three soldiers were part of the African Union force fighting al-Shabab in Somalia and had stopped over in the border town of Garissa on their way back into Somalia. He says the three were part of a group of five soldiers who had gone to a garage to change a punctured tire on their vehicle when seven gunmen attacked them. Two survived the attack.

Kenyan police in September said they disrupted a major terrorist attack in its final stages of planning after they found four suicide vests rigged with hundreds of metal ball bearings, two improvised explosive devices, four AK-47 assault rifles and 12 grenades in Eastleigh. Two ethnic Somalis have been charged in court.

Abdullahi Halakhe, a Horn of Africa analyst for the International Crisis Group, said such attacks and findings have led to a mindset among many Kenyans that all Somalis are terrorists. But he points out that many Kenyan-Somalis strongly disagree with al-Shabab. He worries the strained relations and increased violence could wreak havoc on the country's March presidential election.

"It's slowly getting out of hand," Halakhe said. "Since Kenya's intervention in Somalia last October there is a fair amount of profiling of Somalis from the security forces." He also noted that authorities have not definitively proven that al-Shabab has been behind the attacks.

Another aspect that adds to the tension is that Eastleigh is fairly prosperous compared to Kenyan slums that sit nearby. Many people blame the construction boom on Somali pirates who have laundered pirate ransom money into Kenyan construction. Halekhe, though, said that accusation comes without any real proof.

Many of Monday's rioters were jobless young Kenyans.
