New iMac teardown reveals lots of adhesive and almost no end user upgrade options

New iMac teardown reveals lots of adhesive and almost no end user upgrade options

As with every big Apple product launch, iFixIt has given the new 2012 iMac the teardown treatment. Unfortunately, it only receives a repairability score of 3 out of 10. Most of this is attributed to the difficulty level of replacing common items such as RAM or a hard drive. This time around, it's no easy task.

The first thing realized upon tearing open the new iMac is that Apple has ditched the traditional screen enclosure that used to be held in with magnets for an adhesive. According to iFixIt, it's simliar to the adhesive used in iPads. You'll need a heat gun and your ninja skills to even break into the computer. After doing so, the foam around the edges that secures the screen will have to be completely replaced. If you break the glass in the process you'll also have to replace the LCD since they are fused together in order to make the iMac so thin.

We were quite worried when we saw that super-thin bezel during Apple's keynote, and unfortunately we were correct: the glass and LCD are now glued to the iMac's frame with incredibly strong adhesive. Gone are the lovely magnets that held the glass in place in iMacs of yesteryear.

Once you get beyond the screen you'll have quite a bit of work to do before you can even replace something as little as a RAM card since it's hidden beneath the logic board. Anyone who has an older generation iMac currently enjoys being able to lay the computer flat, unscrew a few screws, pop their RAM cards out and hot swap them. This is definitely not the case here so for most users, they'll need to pay Apple's ridiculous premium for a RAM upgrade instead of ordering RAM for a lot less on their own.

iFIxIt also found some traces and connectors on their base model 21.5" iMac that they believe are for Apple's own proprietary Fusion Drive. In other words, if you order a model that is baseline, you won't be able to add your own SSD as the connectors are Apple proprietary and the connectors on upper models may even come soldered onto the main board.

While many people were irritated with the lack of repairability and upgradeability of the 15" retina MacBook Pro, the 13" variant showed a few improvements.

While laptops are not necessarily made to be largely upgradeable, desktops are. This isn't exactly good news for iMac fans who depend on being able to upgrade basic items in their computers over the years. If you'd like your new iMac to last and don't want to attempt to get past tons of glue in order to upgrade it yourself, you'll have to pay Apple a large premium for a spec'd out model.

Is upgradeability a huge factor to you when purchasing a desktop? And if you were considering a new iMac, does any of this deter you from getting one?

Greater Odds of Domestic Violence for Two-Income Couples | Psych ...

Greater Odds of Domestic Violence for Two-Income Couples Intimate partner violence is two times more likely to occur in two income households, compared to those where only one partner works, according to a new study.

Conducted by Sam Houston State University researchers Cortney A. Franklin, Ph.D., and doctoral student Tasha A. Menaker and supported by the Crime Victims? Institute, the study looked at the impact of education levels and employment among heterosexual partners as it relates to domestic violence.

While the researchers found that differences in education levels appeared to have little influence, when both partners were working, intimate partner violence increased.

?When both male and females were employed, the odds of victimization were more than two times higher than when the male was the only breadwinner in the partnership, lending support to the idea that female employment may challenge male authority and power in a relationship,? said the researchers.

The study was based on telephone interviews with 303 women who identified themselves as either currently or recently in a serious romantic relationship.

Based on the Fourth Annual Texas Crime Victimization Survey, about 67 percent of these women, who ranged in age from 18 to 81, reported some form of physical or psychological victimization by their partner during the last two years. These included having something thrown at them; being pushed, grabbed or shoved; slapped, hit, kicked or bitten; or threatened with a gun or knife.

The study found that more than 60 percent of women in two-income couples reported victimization, while only 30 percent of women reported victimization in cases when only the male partner was employed.

?When women are home-bound through their role as domestic workers, they lack connections to co-workers and the social capital that is produced through those connections, in addition to wages, job prestige, resources, and thus, power. In turn, they must rely solely on their male partner for financial sustenance and can benefit from the distinction that his employment brings the couple,? the researchers noted in the study.

?Those women who work outside the home have access to these tangible and intangible assets, which may devalue or, in some cases, even undermine the contributions and provisions supplied by male-only employment.?

The study explored other factors that may contribute to intimate partner violence, including witnessing violence by a parent during childhood, accepting the use of violence in adult relationships, and experiencing relationship distress, such as problems generated by money, chores, social activities or sexual relations. The researchers found that distress in the relationship and witnessing intimate partner violence during childhood increased the odds of victimization.

Finally, the study found that Hispanic women were significantly less likely than white females to report intimate partner violence and that older women of all races and ethnicities were less likely to be victimized than younger women.

The researchers recommended that professionals who treat victims of intimate partner violence develop specific strategies to address these risk factors and cultural differences. They also suggested that professionals target youth who have witnessed violence during childhood with additional programming for better methods of conflict resolution among adults in intimate relationships.

The study is scheduled to be published in the journal Violence Against Women.

Amazon Want 100% Of Netflix Streaming On Their Cloud - internet TV

Regardless of the fact that Netflix and Amazon are fierce competitors in the video-streaming market, Vice President of Amazon Web Services Andy Jassy actually wants Netflix, its biggest customer, to be one of the largest businesses in the world running entirely on his companies web services platform. Because despite the two participating in the same market, the two of them need each other.

Netflix rely on Amazon?s Cloud

Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix and a vocal competitor to Amazon?s Instant Video service, indeed likes Amazon for some things?like their web service platform, which his company users to provide Netflix subscribers with the things they love?streaming video. ?The?biggest benefit is the scale,? Hastings said. ?Now we?re on a cost curve and an architecture that, as more people use it, gets cheaper.?

Even with the two companies competing on a fierce level, Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon has assured Hastings and Netflix that utilizing Amazon?s cloud services is a safe bet. Andy Jassy, a senior Amazon VP agrees that Netflix is an important customer for the Amazon team. ?Netflix is every bit as important a customer to us as Amazon retail,? Jassy said.

So what exactly does Netflix use Amazon?s cloud web services platform for? Hastings explained to those who attended Amazon?s Cloud event in Las Vegas that the company utilizes it for a variety of uses beyond basic storage. ?Netflix?s biggest problem is?ranking,? Hastings said, continuing that Netflix has the unbelievable task of fitting over 10,000 videos into the space of about 10 inches of screen real estate at times.

Hastings stated that when his company gets the ranking right, users are more apt to stream content through the Netflix service. When they get it wrong, he says, users go see what?s on basic cable. Netflix, ironically, uses Amazon?s cloud services to ensure their users find videos that actually interest them.

Planting the Seeds for 2013 Business Success: 3 Strategic Tips for ...

?

One of the most important procedures to keep your business more successful than its competitors is to have a strong and stable strategic plan. A strategic plan will help define and prioritize key goals and objectives to help your company grow to new heights. Keep these 3 strategic planning tips in mind for your company:

1. Identify Realistic Goals

Setting obtainable goals for your company will allow for successes throughout. Each time goals are achieved, you are able to move to larger, more challenging goals. Keeping your goals realistic will help push your employees to accomplish new tasks and not settle for failure. Have a goal system where there are short-term and long-term goals set for both your company and each employee. Applying deadlines and check-ins on a quarterly, bi-annual or annual basis will help to track if your employees and company are meeting expectations.

2. Analyze ?Lifetime Value? and ?Life Cycle Management? For All Potential Clients

When analyzing different clients to work with it is important to look at their Lifetime Value with the company. This means to look beyond the first project or their initial budget and see what the lifespan of working together can bring. Often, when finding long-term clients, it will create stronger relationships, loyalty and understand of what will be delivered in comparison to client?s expectations. The second aspect is Life Cycle Management. After analyzing the lifespan look into what needs to be done to keep the relationship and what is all of their areas that can be improved?

3. Find The Right Fit

There will always be overarching goals and projects your company will strive to work towards, but it is not always in the company?s best interest to work toward one goal. Knowing the right fit for your company might mean to put a few goals on hold for the time being. This also might mean to turn down a few projects if they do not help your company move forward. Find the projects and/or clients that work well with your company and correlate with the realistic goals that have been set. If your goals are successful you will be successful, so keep this in mind when setting them.
