Obama Administration: Hamas to Blame for Gaza Violence

When it comes to the escalating border violence between Israel and the Gaza strip, Obama administration officials have made the U.S. position clear: Hamas is to blame.

Aboard Air Force One, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters that the administration strongly condemns the on-going rocket fire from Gaza. Carney lamented the civilian casualties among both the Israelis and Palestinians over the last few days, but said it is Hamas, a U.S.-designated terror group, which governs the Gaza strip, that is instigating the violence.

"Hamas claims to have the best interest of the Palestinian people at heart, yet it continues to engage in violence that is counterproductive to the Palestinian cause," Carney said. "Attacking Israel on a near daily basis does nothing to help Palestinians in Gaza or to move the Palestinian people any close to achieving self-determination."

This is the worst flare-up of violence between Israel and the Palestinians in several years. After contending with a steady stream of missiles being fired by Hamas into Southern Israel over the course of this year, the Jewish state launched its own offensive on Wednesday, killing Ahmed Jabari, a Hamas military leader. In retaliation, the group launched nearly 150 more rockets at Israel on Thursday. The attack killed three Israelis in the southern town of Kiryat Malakhi, with rocket fire reaching Israel's largest city of Tel Aviv.

In just the last two days at least 15 Palestinians have reportedly been killed, in addition to the Israeli casualties. There are also reports that Israel may be preparing for a ground operation as it moves troops near the border. A ground incursion by Israel into Gaza could signal the beginning of an all-out war.

When asked about the possibility of a ground offensive, Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes told reporters on a conference call that the United States respects Israel's right to defend itself, but would not like to see the conflict escalate further.

"Our view is the Israelis have a right of self-defense when their citizens are faced with the threat of indiscriminate rocket fire from within Gaza. Ultimately it's up to the Israeli government to make a determination about how they are going to carry out their military objective," said Rhodes. "But we've also said the best course of action would be for there to be a general de-escalation of the violence, but the onus is on Hamas and those with influence over Hamas to help bring about that de-escalation so we don't see a widening conflict. "

An Israel Defense Forces spokesman told ABC News that there are no immediate plans to begin a ground operation in Gaza, though the military is prepared to do so if needed.

"At this point, we have not received directives from the political echelon to embark on a ground maneuver in the Gaza Strip," the spokesman said. "We are prepared for the possible expansion of the operation if necessary but are currently engaged in the aerial phase that has included pinpoint targeting of approximately 250 sites. These sites include medium- and short-range rockets, launching pits, storage depots and senior terrorist leaders."

Both President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have contacted leaders in Egypt, Turkey and other European allies who have influence with Hamas.

Egypt, whose new governing Muslim Brotherhood party has a relationship with Hamas, also has a binding peace treaty with Israel. Under the previous regime, led by Hosni Mubarak, Egypt was one of the staunchest and most reliable U.S. allies in the region. State Department Deputy spokesperson Mark Toner told reporters today that the administration is imploring Egypt to use its regional influence to help stop the escalating conflict.

But Egyptian officials have publicly said that the Palestinians have the right to self-defense, and diplomatic relations between Israel and Egypt have been strained over the violence. This week Egypt's ambassador to Israel returned to Cairo for consultations, and Israel's ambassador to Egypt also returned to Jerusalem before the offensive was launched. On Friday Egypt's prime minister, Hesham Kandil, will travel to Gaza to speak with Hamas officials.

Toner refused to characterize the substance of the conversations between U.S. and Egyptian officials over the conflict, but said that both countries remain in agreement that the violence needs to end.

"There is a very clear path here to ending the violence and that's for the rocket attacks to stop, so we would hope that that's a message that would be delivered," he said.

PE & VC Pros Tip off New NBA Season: Slideshow

Posted on: November 05, 2012

Unlike the National Hockey League (which has a couple of boldface names from our target markets involved, as well), the National Basketball Association is tipping off its new season this week? well, depending where you live? and peHUB has got the latest predictions for the hoops community. So far, VC and private equity pros? foray into the bigs has enjoyed mixed success. This year could break the bank for unsuccessful franchises, or, for those contending in the postseason, re-engage fan bases that have been disinterested for years. Investing pros should use their savvy to double down on basketball bets now, while NHL fans have nothing to occupy them through the winter.

76ers

Boston Celtics

Memphis Grizzlies

Golden State Warriors

Detroit Pistons

Unlike the NFL, peHUB is long Philly this hoops season. Sure, they?ve got former LA sad-panda Andrew Bynum?but his youth in tandem with Jrue Holiday could take this squad deep into the postseason, or at least as deep as the Miami Heat will allow them to go. Philly may wind up seeded in the top half of 2013?s playoffs, making PE pros Joshua Harris, of Apollo Global Management, and David Blitzer, of Blackstone Group. look like savvy managers not only in the boardroom, but in the front office as well.

Prediction: Bynum?s injury is bad news, don?t expect the 6ers to repeat last year?s magic without him.

Can this aging squad of superstars get the job done in 2012-13? Judging by their early outing against the Miami LeBrons, this franchise isn?t just losing its cool, it?s already on the way to a disappointment compared to last year?s impressive postseason run. The outsized Darko Mili?i? won?t make up for Shaq?s absence. Bain Capital (and Democrat!!!) Stephen Pagliuca and his band of PE & VC pros that make up the Celts? ownership group might be looking to sell, if this investment continues to lose its shine.

Prediction: Punching the playoff ticket, but not a whole lot after that. Mr. Shuttlesworth had the right idea.

The Grizz only made the list thanks to last week?s sale to Robert J. Pera, CEO of Ubiquiti Networks Inc. Jerryd Bayless is a big addition that ought to provide the team the support it needs in multiple places. Potentially the biggest thing going against the Grizz (no different than the woebegotten T-Wolves up north) is the fact that they?re a small market team in a league with a proclivity for approving mega-market trades to unite superstars and boost TV ad sales.

Prediction: The Grizz have the talent to turn it around, so expect a playoff run after a dismal end to the ?12 season

Things are looking up for the Golden State Warriors in 2012-13. However, that?s because they couldn?t get a whole lot worse. KPCB veteran and Warriors? majority owner Joe Lacob was unceremoniously booed last year during Warrior legend Chris Mullin?s jersey retirement at the end of last season after trading hometown fave Monta Ellis. Now, Stephen Curry has to produce. Otherwise, that chorus from the upper deck will only get louder.

Prediction: Punching the playoff ticket?but Lacob will need to staff up, big time, to be competitive out west. Watching Curry will be a blast.

Platinum Equity pro and PE baller Tom Gores gets to hang out with the likes of Kid Rock at his new investment?s arena (which, is dilapidated, and ought to be replaced). No word on whether the LPs also get a chunk of the courtside-carry. A self-described ?now person,? the Platinum Gores ought to employ a little more patience waiting for this year?s franchise (and next year?s draft pick) to unfold.

Prediction: This team is going to require a big capital infusion to compete with the Bulls. That much, Gores has got. But the Motor City shouldn?t expect a playoff run in 2013.

Garden of Moments: Home made Christmas crafts to do with your kids

If you love your kids and partner more than anything in the world, and you love nothing more than spending quality time with them, whether it's going to the park or doing fun indoor activities together, then you sound just like me.

If you love doing arts and crafts with your kids then you've defiantly come to the right place, because this blog post will show you some fun Christmas-themed, kid-friendly crafts. Doing these arty activities together helps you bond with your kids - much more so than giving them the materials and leaving them to make the crafts while you go off and play some Cheekybingo or do the housework. Doing crafts together is the perfect way to bond and work as a team.

?Christmas cookie tree decorations

Begin by making a batch of your favorite flavored cookies. Try and make them as round as possible because you are now going to decorate them to make them look like Christmas baubles. Once they have cooled, carefully pierce a skewer through the top and thread a thin ribbon through the hole. Tie the two ends together. Let the kids have fun coating the cookies in colorful frosting. Then give them some silver edible balls to add the finishing touch.

?Home made Christmas cards

Nothing beats the sentimental value of receiving home made Christmas cards from the kids. Start by buying a pack of multi-colored pieces of A5 sized card and fold them in half. Then get creative and decorate your cards with ribbons, colored markers and sequins. Why not give your kids some cotton wool and help them make a fluffy beard for Santa or even a snowman?

?Make a robin felt toy

?Using some brown felt, cut out 2 robin body shapes, then cut out a circle using red felt for the robin's tummy. Stitch the two robin shapes together leaving a small gap for stuffing. Then glue the red tummy onto the robin. Next, cut out two feet from yellow felt and sandwich them between the two bodies so they stick out from the bottom of the robin. Glue on some jiggly eyes and a beak then stuff the robin with some cotton wool, or even sweets and place him under the tree.

Rival Libya militias battle on streets of Tripoli

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Rival Libyan militias fired guns and rocket-propelled grenades at each other in Tripoli on Sunday and set fire to a former intelligence building in one of the worst breakdowns in security in the capital since Muammar Gaddafi's fall.

At least five people were wounded and a stray bullet entered a hospital in the heart of the city, where residents rushed to arm themselves, saying calls to police had gone unheeded. After more than 12 hours, the army moved in.

The violence underscored the challenge faced by Libya's first freely-elected government, approved just last week, to rein in militias which gained power during the conflict that ended Gaddafi's 42-year rule a year ago and hold together a country riven with clan, regional and sectarian divisions.

By early afternoon, a building belonging to the Supreme Security Committee (SSC), a body set up last year to try to regulate armed groups, was in flames and being looted by members of a rival militia faction, witnesses said. A sports shop that helps fund one of the militia groups was also looted.

The fight erupted just after midnight after a dispute over the detention of a member of one of the armed groups, residents in the southern district of Sidi Khalifa said.

Both militias are affiliated to the SSC, an umbrella group for various armed groups that refused to join the official police or army, saying they were still run by Gaddafi loyalists.

Civilians blocked the street where the fighting raged to prevent cars entering the battleground where the sound of gunfire rang out. Many civilians went home to get their own arms.

"We called the police early in the morning to help us stop the shooting, but no one came," resident Khaled Mohamed told Reuters.

A stray bullet caused panic at the nearby Tripoli Central Hospital, sending doctors and nurses running for cover. Dr. Khaled Ben Nour said five casualties had been brought in.

"We have real patients with real needs. These rogue militias need to leave us in peace so we can do our jobs," Ben Nour said.

LAWLESS

Some fighters said the clash was over the detention of the militia member while others said the SSC headquarters - a former intelligence building - had been occupied by a militia called Support Unit No. 8 led by Mohamed al-Warfali.

A group of rival militias - also belonging to the SCC - fired at the building from a former post office.

"Mohamed al-Warfali and his lawless group of men have occupied the SSC building and refuse to come out," said militia member Mohamed al-Himrazy who accused Warfali's group of breaking SSC rules.

Others said that a militia group came to free a member detained by Warfali in the SSC building.

The clash highlighted the dangerously chaotic nature of the semi-official militias in Libya which hold a great deal of power and have loyalties sometimes at odds with the government's.

At nightfall, as the shooting was dying down, around 20 army pick up trucks mounted with anti-aircraft surrounded the SSC building and army officials went in, retrieving papers and binders of documents.

The SSC, run and paid for by the Interior Ministry, is much better armed that the official police. The ministry has repeatedly promised to disarm the militias but has yet to do so, to the disgust of many Libyans.

"The government needs to find a solution for this security mess," said resident Khaled Ahmed.

"It's been two years since the revolution and there is still no security. They either need to find a solution or we take to the streets again."

Apart from draining public finances, SSC members have been accused of kidnappings and intimidation across the country. For their part, the armed revolutionaries who fought the war feel unrepresented by the elected civilian members.

About 2 km (1.2 miles) from the gun battle, members of the General National Congress debated whether the new government should be sworn in on Thursday and whether they should move to a different city because of recurrent attacks on their building.

On Wednesday, security forces fended off protesters outside the congress building as a cabinet line-up led by Prime Minister Ali Zeidan was finally approved following Libya's first free elections in July. Protesters said some of the nominees had past links with the Gaddafi regime.

On Sunday, violence also erupted outside the capital.

A car bomb exploded in front of a police station in Benghazi, injuring three police officers in the latest in a series of attacks on security officials in Libya's second largest city, where the U.S. ambassador was killed in September.

The front of the central Hadayeq police station was charred and blackened with smoke. The entrance to the station was destroyed, with glass strewn on the street and firefighters putting out a fire engulfing a police car.

A Reuters photographer saw three policemen receive first aid for minor injuries in front of the station. Officials at the scene said there were no deaths.

New Jimmy Savile sex allegations surface

For 20 years, Jimmy Savile's children's show was a highlight of Saturday night family TV on the BBC. But now, British police say 300 people have come forward with claims that Savile abused them during his 60-year broadcasting career. NBC's Annabel Roberts reports.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

LONDON -- Fresh allegations of sexual misconduct by late BBC celebrity Jimmy Savile emerged Wednesday.

?

Terry Pratt, a former hospital porter at Leeds General Infirmary, told the BBC?that Savile, a former BBC radio DJ and television host, would arrive in the 1980s with teenage girls, often two at a time, during early-morning hours and be given the key to nurses? rooms. They would leave before dawn, Pratt said.

?

?

The girls seemed "star-struck" and "not very streetwise," he told the BBC, which has come under a judge?s scrutiny for?a?culture and practices that allegedly enabled sexual misconduct to go undetected for?years. Savile hosted the ?Top of the Pops? music show and his family-oriented ?Jim'll Fix It? prime-time show.

?

When asked why he did not report Savile's alleged hospital visits?at the time, Pratt?said: "We daren't. ... We were in awe of him, to be honest."

?

Police are probing claims that Savile, who died in?October 2011 at age 84, abused about 300 young people. He was accused of using his fame to coerce teens into having sex with him in his car, his camper and even his BBC dressing rooms.

?

Police arrested 1970s pop star Gary Glitter earlier this week as part of their investigation. He was held for 10 hours and released on bail for a mid-December court hearing.

Authorities are questioning how suspicions about Savile were handled at?BBC by Director General?George Entwistle and his predecessor, Mark Thompson, the?new CEO of the New York Times Co.

?

Savile is accused of possible sexual abuse of patients at three hospitals for which he raised funds: Leeds, Broadmoor and Stoke Mandeville, the Guardian newspaper reported.

?

Leeds, in a statement reported by Reuters on?Wednesday, said, ?We continue to be shocked by each new allegation. It is important that they are investigated properly."

Some of Savile's alleged 300 victims had appeared on his TV shows. NBC's Keir Simmons reports.

The porter?s allegations?came a day after a former royal aide said Savile's behavior on visits to Prince Charles' residence, St. James' Palace, had aroused "concern and suspicion."

?

Dickie Arbiter told the Guardian that?Savile would greet young women working at the palace by "rubbing his lips all the way up their arms."

?

A ex-patient at Broadmoor?told the tabloid the Sun she was put in solitary confinement for six months after telling a nurse that Savile had sexually assaulted her.

?

The nurse reportedly accused her of "bizarre made-up thoughts."
